Boot With USB Drive Using Rufus and UNebootin

0
0

When USB drives came to market, it was said that it will replace CD because there were lots of advantages of USB drives on CDs. They need lesser space to carry; you can delete data from it and store new one, and they have faster reading and writing speed. However, the ability to install Windows OS / Linux OS was only possible using a CD. Fortunately, things have changed and you can now install any OS from the USB drive by making your flash drive Bootable.

There are lots of freeware on the internet to convert your normal USB drive to a bootable drive allowing you to boot any OS from it later on (except Mac OS).

Prerequisite:

  • A USB drive with at least 4 GB space (8 GB recommended).
  • OS image file (ISO file).

Rufus (Free | Windows):
3

Rufus is a freeware with which you can create a bootable drive of almost all Operating Systems. Rufus is available in two versions portable and installer. The portable version is a stand-alone executable file which you can launch from anywhere it is saved on your PC, and the installer version will get installed on your PC, this is no performance difference between them. Below are the steps to create a bootable USB drive using Rufus.

  1. Launch Rufus on your PC.
  2. Select your USB drive under “Device” section.
  3. Click on the CD drive icon under the “Format option” and select the ISO file.
  4. Finally, click on “Start” button.
  5. Rufus will start copying the files from the ISO file (this will format the drive and all data on the drive will be erased).
  6. After some time, Rufus will notify you about the completion of the process.

UNebootin (Free | Windows, Linux, Mac):

UNebootin is the best freeware for making the bootable drive for Linux. UNebootin is also a stand-alone tool, but the best part of the UNebootin is that you don’t need to download the image files separately, it is built with the feature to directly download the OS and make your drive bootable.

UNebootin creates live USB so you can try the OS without actually installing it on your PC, this feature is restricted to Linux-based OS only like Android, BackTrack, Kali Linux and more. To make your drive bootable using UNebootin just follow the steps below:

  1. Download the UNebootin.
  2. Launch it on your PC.
    1
  3. Select the distribution from the “Distribution” section or if you have image file then select that image file under the “DiskImage” section.
  4. Select your USB drive and click OK.
  5. UNebootin will begin the process and prompt you whether to reboot your PC.2

UNebootin is for those who wants to install any Linux version without even downloading the ISO from official websites separately.

Download UNebootin (4.6 MB)

Install OS from bootable USB drive:

  1. Plug in your USB drive and reboot your PC.
  2. When your PC is booting up, press the key to access the boot menu (usually it is F12, but it varies with the manufacturer).
  3. When in boot menu select your drive and press enter to boot it up.
  4. Now follow the instructions to install the OS on your PC.

On Mac:

  1. Plug in the USB drive to mac.
  2. While your Mac is booting up keep pressing the Alt key.
  3. You will see the bootable disk, select the drive to boot from that flash drive.

To make your drive usable again, just format your drive with NTFS file system.

So these were some tools to ease up the task of making a bootable USB drive. Although there are lots of USB bootable making software available in the market, these are one of the most reliable and easy-to-use utilities.

In this article, we are going to talk about how you can enable or disable USB ports on your Windows laptop or desktop as per your requirements. Data theft by accessing the PCs via USB ports is one of the most common and easiest ways out there. You can even avoid unauthorized access to your PC by an external device/user by disabling USB ports.

Method 1: Make changes in the registry to enable or disable USB ports on a Windows PC

Making Changes in the registry is the easiest and free way to enable or disable USB ports. Microsoft Windows has its inbuilt registry editor with which you can edit registries easily. This method works in Windows XP/ Vista/7/8/8.1,10 and 11.

  1. Open “Run” (Win + R) and type “Regedit” and press enter.
  2. In the registry editor, navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR” using the left pane.
  3. In the right pane, you’ll see a key named “Start”, double-click on it.
  4. Change the value data from “3” to “4” and click on ok.

Now your PC will not recognize any other USB device than the ones which are connected while making the changes in the registry.

Method 2: Disable USB Ports

Disabling ports from the device manager could be a better solution for keeping users access USB ports on your computer.

  1. Launch “Run” (Win + R) and type “devmgmt.msc” and press enter.
  2. In Device Manager, expand the “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”.
  3. Right-click on one of them and open properties.
  4. Go to the “Driver” tab and click on “Disable”.
  5. Click on “OK” to confirm the action.

Now all of your USB ports are disabled and now no one can use them until you enable them. The ports will get enabled automatically after restarting your PC.

Method 3: Use any tool like Intelli-Admin’s USB disabler

If you don’t want all this mess and just want to enable disable USB ports with one click, then you need a free tool to do that.

  1. Download and install Intelli Admin USB Disabler.
  2. Launch it and select “block all users” and click on “Apply”.
  3. After clicking on “Apply” the USB disabler will go to the background and starts doing its job.
  4. You can also allow any particular USB device by accessing the USB disabler from the system tray.

USB Disabler Pro is the best option if you don’t want to edit the registry which is also risky because one accidental change in the wrong registry key might kill your PC.

Download Intelli-Admin USB Disabler Pro – $599 (2.98 MB)

Conclusion

The registry edit method is the best option to disable all ports all at once and to enable them back, restart your PC. You can go for Intelli Admin’s USB Disabler Pro for a more easy method, or you can skip spending $599 and do that using registry editor only.
